Depending on your budget, there are many apartment locators in Bangkok. They can find you anything from a luxurious penthouse apartment, to an American style condo that will suit a family of eight. They don’t usually bother with anyone though who wants a place for less than 35,000 baht a month. This is just over US $1,000 and is very expensive in Bangkok. Most apartments cost between 8,000 and 15,000 a month (US $240 to $460) and are extremely nice. I live in a serviced apartment (with weekly maid service, TV, cable TV, good security, parking etc.) for only 10,000 a month (US $305), and it’s ten times nicer than any place I lived in the US. And what about buying a villa in Bangkok? Go to https://www.fazwaz.com/thailand/bangkok-villa-for-sale first and you will be amazed how many choice you will have for reasonable prices.
However if you’re looking for a place for your family, or a higher-end luxury apartment in downtown Bangkok, by all means use an apartment locator. They are highly knowledgeable of the area, and will usually only take you to the types of places you’re interested in. Again, you will pay a higher price than if you looked at the same building yourself, but if you’re paying over $1,000 a month, chances are you’re not concerned about that anyway.
Don’t forget, all Thai apartment buildings require the first month’s rent, plus two month’s deposit before you can move in. So a $500 a month apartment will require $1,500 to be handed over when you sign the lease. Most people I know have had no problem getting the deposit back when they leave, but it’s something to be aware of.
In Bangkok – Bangkok is a city, and it’s a relatively conservative city. Thai women dress very conservatively and are always surprised when Western women don’t. In Bangkok, if you’re a female, you should wear short sleeved shirts (not spaghetti strap tops), and shorts that are not too short. Skirts and dresses are also appropriate. Bras are necessary, although I’m surprised at how many Western women don’t wear them – and Thai women are shocked by this. Swimsuit tops and short shirts are completely inappropriate and will only get you many stares from the Thais. For men, you should wear slacks or shorts (not too short) and a t shirt or cotton shirt. Tank tops are not really appropriate, although you will see Westerners wearing them. Sandals are fine or good walking shoes. Bangkok’s sidewalks are littered with bumps and potholes, so make sure you have comfortable shoes to wear and always watch where you’re walking. You don’t want to break a leg.
